Sold out? How space opens up on a full crossing
“Sold out” is rarely the end of the story on a Marine Atlantic crossing. Space comes back on full sailings almost every day.
This guide explains why it comes back, why catching it is the hard part, and how to get an alert the moment matching space opens — instead of refreshing the booking page yourself.
The crossing is sold out — now what?
Start by reading the “no” precisely. A sailing sells vehicle space, cabins and walk-on space separately — so “sold out” often means one of those pools, not all three.
Three checks before you rearrange anything:
- Check walk-on space. A sailing with no room for your car may still take your party on foot.
- Check the other route. North Sydney ↔ Port aux Basques runs year-round; North Sydney ↔ Argentia runs mid-June to late September.
- Check a day either side. One day of flex is often the whole difference between full and free.
Does space actually open up again?
Yes — the booking rules make sure of it. Marine Atlantic charges nothing to change or cancel a reservation 48 hours or more ahead of the sailing. Inside 48 hours, the fee is $25.
Backing out stays cheap right up to the day of the crossing, so plans stay loose. People book two dates and drop one. A cottage falls through. A work week moves.
Every one of those puts space back on a sailing that read “sold out” an hour earlier.
Travellers on the Newfoundland forums report the same pattern: months that look full keep churning as the date nears. Cabins are reported to move last — held back for commercial drivers, then released a day or two out.
Why does re-checking work?
Released space goes straight back on sale, to whoever is looking at that moment. There is no queue and no priority.
A cancellation lands, the sailing has space for a few minutes, and somebody takes it. Check before or after those minutes and you would never know it happened.
That is why every forum thread says “keep checking” — and why the advice is so hard to follow. It works only as often as you check, and nobody can watch a booking page for weeks.
Is there a waitlist or a cancellation list?
Not for a sold-out sailing. Travellers who have asked report one consistent answer: “there is no cancellation list as such, you need to keep monitoring the Marine Atlantic website.”
Marine Atlantic's site is built for booking and for live sailing status. Neither tells you when a full sailing has space again.
Phoning reservations can turn something up and is worth the call. But it is the same manual re-checking, only by phone.
How do I get alerted when space opens?
Space comes back — catching it is the hard part. A watch does the catching for you.
Set a watch and describe your crossing once: either direction or both, dates with up to seven days of flex, your party, your vehicle, any cabin or kennel you need. FerryB’y checks every sailing in that window around the clock and emails you an alert the moment matching space opens.
The honest shape of it: one active watch per account, running for three days, with a summary when it ends. Looking for a ferry tracker? This is that job, done for you.
Booking stays yours, on Marine Atlantic's official site. FerryB’y never sells anything and never takes payment.
